PROGRAMME

Here are details of some of the fantastic acts lined up for the Tattoo in 2010. More will be confirmed in the run up to the Tattoo, so watch this space!

A TRIBUTE TO THE ROYAL NAVY FIELD GUN RACE

Field Gun Image The Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo is pleased to welcome, for the second year, the Royal Navy in a tribute to the famous Field Gun Race best known for being a highlight of the Royal Tournament over ten years ago.

At the Windsor Royal Tattoo two 18 man teams from HMS Nelson, Portsmouth will compete head-to-head in a thrilling race acroos an 85 yard long track with a 190 Pattern Field Gun, changing wheels, connecting the gun and limber, and firing.

The Guns used in the Tattoo’s Field Gun Race are similar to those used in the Boer War. The weigh 1250lbs, with additional weight coming from the Limber and four wheels (each weighing 120lbs). The total amount, which is lifted in one go at the ’Double Lift’ stage is over one tonne, similar to the weight of an average family car.

On average, a run takes one minute and 25 seconds. The World record at present is 1 minute 18.88 seconds set by HMS Collingwood. Will the Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo see this record being broken?

THE MUSICAL DRIVE OF THE KING’S TROOP ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY

King’s Troop RHAThe Musical Drive will make a welcome return at the 2010 Tattoo, and is comprised of six gun teams of six horses and three riders each, plus four officers and four Section Commanders. The horses are all Irish Draughts, all cared for by the soldiers riding them with a crucial back up team to provide extra support. Each team pulls a one and a half gun, each of which were used in anger in World War One.

The Drive combines daring moves carried out at varying speeds to dramatic music. By the time they reach the gallop, you will be gripping the edge of your seat. Watch out for the gun blast at the end of the display - it’s loud!

THE MUSICAL RIDE OF THE HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY

Household Cavalry Flag BearerMilitary Equestrian favourites The Household Cavalry will also be returning to the 2010 Tattoo, as they will be celebrating thier 350th Anniversary in 2010 (Watch out for details of a special performance celebrating thier Birthday). The Musical Ride is comprised of soldiers from both The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals regiments, two of the oldest and most senior regiments in the British Army, dating back to 1660. They are seen carrying out ceremonial duties at many of the large State and Royal occasions throughout the year.

However, this does not mean that the Household Cavalry does not serve a more traditional military role as well. Most of the soldiers and officers are in fact ’dual-trained’ and are often draughted into battle in times of serious conflict.

Visitors will be treated to a display of speed and precision from the Musical Ride which compromises 26 horses and riders and a drummer. The high level to which this close knit team is trained becomes obvious as horse and rider perform in perfect harmony.

MASSED BANDS AND FIFES & DRUMS

Bearskins a plenty There will again be a large number of military musicians at this year’s event from all over the UK. The Massed Military Bands from the three Services (The Royal Navy, The Army and the Royal Air Force) will come together to create a spectacular display of sight and sound. Musicians from the Grenadier, Coldstream and Welsh Guards; Royal Artillery; The Mounted Bands of the Household Cavalry; The RAF Squadronaires and the famous Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines (Portsmouth), all join to celebrate the Royal Tattoo’s tri-service theme.

In addition, the Royal Tattoo hope to welcome the Massed Pipes and Drums of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards; The Scots Guards, The Royal Scots Borders; Royal Highland Fusiliers, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Highlanders.

INTERNATIONAL ACT

The King’s Guard Norway will be this years international highlight.  Performing their impressive Drill display will be a team of 120 Guards showing the skill and precision needed to carry out this drill. Supporting the King’s Guard will be four Norwegian World War 2 veterans.
